Types of martial arts

Martial arts are studied for various reasons, the most popular being for self-defense. It also contributes to mental wellness and to building self-confidence. There is a great diversity of martial arts all over the world. The different types of martial arts adapted to the needs of the people in the different countries and also to their different traditions and ideologies. The common goal however, stays the same: to defeat an opponent who bears a physical threat to oneself.

The different types of martial arts also consist of the same system of techniques. It is the form (kata), the use of weaponry and fighting (kumite or sparring). It is important to remember that the different types of martial arts use different terminology in the different countries.

Martial arts underwent developments in the different countries of the world. Today, there are different styles that an individual can train in, according to ones’ own needs and goals. Some of the most popular types of martial arts include Judo and Tae Kwan Do, which are both events in the Summer Olympic Games.

Martial arts and the different types of martial arts have grown in popularity because of a number of factors. Action movies such as Best of the Best, The Bruce Lee – movies and the limited use of martial arts in TV-series such as Walker, Texas Ranger and the Mighty Morphin Power Rangers, created amongst, especially young people the interest to participate in such a sport.

It is not every participant of martial arts’ ultimate goal to become world champion or win an Olympic Gold Medal. Martial arts build strength, endurance, self-discipline and positively contribute to self-confidence. Choosing between the types of martial arts depends on the type of person and on what that person wants to achieve. Some of the other more general known styles are: Thai Chi, Jendo, Aikido, Jujutsu, Goju Ryu, Tang Soo Do, Moo Do Kwan, Capoeira.

Although not generally recognized as types of martial arts, the following is also seen as such: amateur wrestling, archery, fencing (all in Europe), kickboxing, shoot fighting and freestyle wrestling (all in the United States of America).

The Family Safety and Self-Defense Institute use martial art to teach men, women and children self-defense techniques. Self-defense does not refer to any one of the particular types of martial arts, though its goal is to learn people on how to use the basic techniques to fight of an attacker.

Where the types of martial arts differ in the intensity of contact made during a fighting, it is important to remember that when attacked, one cannot choose the fight to be light-, semi- or full contact. The Family Safety and Self-Defense Institute learn you to be ready at all times and that defense is not a halfway-option.
