Martial arts Uniforms
Martial arts are popular the world over, with both males and females, young and old. They are practiced for the sake of fitness and fun, basically as a hobby. However, there is more to martial arts training and practice. Martial arts offer a very particular strain of discipline and respect which is rarely found in any other sport and is even reflected in the how martial arts uniforms are worn.
A martial arts practitioner is expected to show a great deal of respect towards their teacher, fellow students and opponents. Martial arts are seen as a form of self-defense but also as a way to cultivate self-discipline and mental strength. The martial arts uniform acts as an outward show of the practitioner’s mental state and level of discipline. If the martial arts uniform is in disarray, this will not reflect kindly on the practitioner.
The karate martial arts uniform is known as a Gi. Martial arts uniforms consist of a jacket, pants and belt. There are many rules which apply to the martial arts uniforms which are strictly enforced by the instructor. The most obvious of these rules is that the uniform should always be clean and white with no frayed edges. Girls are also required to wear a white T-shirt under their martial arts uniforms whereas it is not required for boys to wear anything under their uniforms.
The length of the martial arts uniforms is important. They cannot be too long as this may hamper the student’s performance by causing them to trip and constricting body movement. However, the uniforms cannot be made too short and may not be made shorter than the mid-point of calf or forearm. Uniforms may also not be cut to length but need to professionally altered.
Martial ars Uniforms come in three different weight divisions: lightweight (9-15 oz), medium weight (7-8 oz) and heavy weight (9-15 oz). The weight of the uniform corresponds with the purpose for which the uniform is intended. Heavy weight uniforms are best used for combat situation as they provide more protection and are less likely to tear. They are also used for individual shows as they create an effective sound. Lightweight and medium weight martial arts uniforms are most commonly used for training and sparing.
The belt, otherwise known as an Obi, the aspect of the martial arts uniform, which represents the level of skill and training reached by the individual. Varying colors, which ascend from lightest to darkest, represents the levels. The first level is represented by a white belt, then comes yellow, red, green, blue and finally black. There are also various levels of black belt.
Certain martial arts uniforms such as Taekwondo uniforms require specific protective gear. These include shin, forearm, chest and groin protectors. These must all be white and be worn under the uniform. Mouth guards and head protection gear are also required. Taikwondo uniforms are V-necked and black trim appears on the uniforms of those who have reached black belt level.
