The art of self defense

It is something we all have to deal with in our lives – being harassed or attacked by another person. Expert training is vital and understanding some basic self defense techniques can save your life or the life of a loved one.

Did you know you are more likely to be attacked than experience a violent natural event like a hurricane? It makes sense to prepare yourself as best you can for the inevitable.

Nowadays people are so involved in their own lives that they forget to take notice of what is happening in their environment. A suspicious character could be harmless or a violent mugging waiting to happen. To be prepared for any type of attack is one of the hallmarks in learning the art of self defense.

Children are exposed to more violence now than at any other time in history. Television, violent video games and increased media coverage of brutal attacks may reinforce violent behavior in malicious people. This could explain the increased levels of personal attacks that are being documented in communities around the world.

The unseen cost

Physical attacks leave an emotional scar that can take years to heal and cause anti-social behavior. It is not uncommon for people who are victims of attack to avoid going out or share activities with their friends. Having a good knowledge of the art of self defense can reduce your fear and give you good judgment in a potentially dangerous situation.

What’s the best path to learning the art of self defense?

Many fitness centers and community police stations offer self defense classes but today’s busy lifestyles often prevent people from taking them. Home-study self defense is becoming increasingly popular and can provide valuable knowledge for the whole family.

The steps
The first step in the art of self defense is deciding on a plan. Your whole family should have a plan for dealing with an attack; a good self-defense program will help you create an effective defense plan that could save your life and the life of your loved ones.

You should learn how to defend yourself from long-range, mid-range and short-range attacks.
Knowing how to stop an attacker from getting too close is very important. you should learn how to keep an attacker at a controlled distance from you so that you can defend yourself most effectively.
Breaking out of a hold an attacker may have on you is also vital, especially if you are attacked by surprise and need to think quickly.

Learning how to deal with weapons is vital to the art of self-defense and many attackers will carry a weapon and be prepared to use it.

Does size matter?

Learning the art of self defense can help you get out of a dangerous situation even if your attacker is larger than you or you are being attacked by more than one person. Learning how to take control of the situation is not easy. A comprehensive self-defense program will teach you a wide variety of skills that can help you defend against large attackers and maintain a level head in a dangerous situation.
